Southern most point of Great Barrier Reef, North
of Moreton Island, Brisbane. Flinders Reef is a
declared Protected Zone and has mooring buoys.
A purely top-class dive site so
close to Brisbane. The array of beauty and shear variety of species to be
found here make it truly outstanding. The only true coral reef within the
Brisbane area. Corals in abundance are staghorn, brain and plate. Soft
corals are also found here.
The sea-life was so outstanding that the government commissioned to
have permanent moorings for boaties to protect a magnificent reef. The URGQ aided in the research for these moorings (see Coastcare
Research page). The moorings project enabled the URGQ to also research
the species at Flinders Reef. There are multiple pelagics ever-present and
the visits of leopard sharks, white-tip reef shark and the odd bronze
whaler make it a dive where almost anything may appear. Depths averaging
15m, nudibranchs are in abundance, plenty of turtles, wobbegongs and
stingrays.
